If its been sitting for that long it could be as simple as a stuck conector gear sleeve. generally your suppose to engage the 4x4 at least once a month to keep it free. This is all located in the front defferential. There's an output shaft gear and the connector sleeve gear rest on this and sometimes gets stuck after being there for a wile. A fork is connected to this gear and the fork to a cable, cable to vaccuum diaphram. Now I don't know if you can just grap the cable and force it free (wouldn't reccomend it) but others might know. Also these systems are used to be moving slightly to completely mesh (aka vehicle moving slightly also). Second thing I'm wondering is the transfer case engaging(an electric motor does this and you should be able to hear it)

p.s. you prbly should put this in the drivetrain section that deals with the transfer case and differentials.(don't worry i made the same mistake earlier)
