Default 2.8 V6 carb problems

I just came into a 1985 blazer and the carb is flooding pretty badly when I get on it. The mech, a friend of mine, says it isn't turning the choke off right far as he can tell. What options do I have in repairing it? When the engine is warm oftentimes it will not start. It will flood. I have to basically hold open the butterfly and gun it and hit the starter for a while to get it to start again due to the flooding. Next year I do not have to have smog, so an aftermarket intake and carb that will work with whatever OEM stuff is hanging off the engine right now is an option.
Obliged,

Wes

You could take the choke off completely and pump the hell out of it to start it cold as a temp fix. If thats not an option, check Jegs and Summit for carbs that will fit. I know nothing of the 2.8s, I have a 2.8 multiport in a Pontiac, but never even SEEN a carbed version...

Can I get a standard non-electric varajet to work in this set up? I see those for sale for cheap. I dont need to pass smog with this year blazer.

I know there's a 4bbl intake floating around (aftermarket) on the net somewhere for the 60 degree v6es. I don't know if the non electric will fit, as again, I know zilch of these engines. I just know enough about carbs in general that removing the choke will murder that problem, but it'll make it a PITA to start when it's cold (getting down in the teens F tonight here... good time to test the cold starting ability on my '00 I've had since early Oct.)

Hey guys, here's the update:

I got a rebuilt carb off a 1983 Buick. It works - good. It has no mechanical kick-down - bad. But the vacuum or whatever helps it kick down in all but overdrive. I had to reroute some vacuum hoses, as some were on opposite sides of the carb. Now it runs fine. Well, as fine as a 2.8 is gonna run. Still gutless... My mpg has gone up a lot, though.
