With the encoder motor removed, you should be able to shift the case using an open end wrench. You should be able to move it with one hand. DO NOT operate the encoder motor unless it is mounted to the transfer case, (permanent damage to the encoder WILL occur).

thanks swartlkk just what i needed . do you know if sometimes there hard to get out of 4x4 manually by turning the shaft under the encoder motor ? i just cant seem to get it to shift out of 4lo by turning it.wont turn in either direction and i dont want to break it or mess it up
i also got all the wires hooked back up i think right but now the are no lights on the 4x4 switch and i checked all fuses none blown

There should be a few detents to hold in a particular position, but those detents shouldn't offer a large amount of resistance to rotation. If the shift sector shaft will not turn, you may have a problem with the bushing in the case that the shaft passes through. This can cause a failure of the encoder motor (either broken gears or a burnt out motor) as secondary failures.
