218k miles on original 4.3 Engine - Anybody have more?
I've got 218,000 miles on the 96 Chevy Blazer I bought new in 1995. It's never had a major problem and the engine has never been rebuilt. It runs great and I just installed my second set of new oil cooler lines as preventive measure.
Any guess as to how much longer this engine will go with proper maintenance....What's the record? |
lol id say ur living on borrowed time, but idk if theres a for sure way to tell how long it will last. as long as keep up on the proper maintenance all you can really do is hope for the best and think of it this way, atleast she lived a loooong life and you deffintly got ur moneys worth.

You could do a complete rebuild of your ENTIRE drivetrain system, and end up with a faulty part leaving you stranded in the middle of nowhere. |
My dads blazer is close with 1k under 200k. shes still running strong, never any rebuild or major expenses, the only things that were replaced is the oil cooler lines and right now we have a ripped motor mount:( It actually runs great, better than mine with only 70k!
EDIT * It's a 96* |
Give me a couple more years and I should be there. I've got a 2000 I bought new in Oct '00 and just turned 180,000. Averaging over 20,000 mile a year thus far and still running strong.
I wouldn't say you are on borrowed time. I've got a '90 C1500 with over 300,000 miles and it still runs strong. Proper maintenance will do wonders to the longevity of vehicles. |
95 Chevy Blazer and just rolled over 325,000 the other day. Only had the truck for a couple weeks now but engine sounds great. Perhaps mine was built on a Wednesday :)
^^^i wanna see pics of this. ive got about 56,500 on my 02 and i couldnt even imagine seeing 325,000 on the clock.
I had over 320K when I replaced my engine. I now have over 400k on the body.

Very impressive everyone......it sounds like Mr. VLS has the record with 320,000 miles on the original engine and 400,000 miles on the body. Hopefully mine will make it that far.
Oil changes every 3,000 miles and other scheduled maintenance has kept mine alive for 218,000 miles. I've never had the engine opened for anything...original head gasket, intake, everything is original and running strong. "Like a Rock"......was no joke |
Guys, have faith in these motors... The GM pushrods (aside from ridiculous intake manifold gasket problems due to poor gasket material) are virtually bullet proof! I have my 93 z24 3.1V6 (60* V6) with 334000 KMS with no major repairs (water pump, valve cover gaskets, small things). My pops has a 95 Astro 4.3 V6 with.... wait for it.... 685 000KMS!!!!! All he has changed is his waterpump, timing chain for preventative maintenance, and regular maitenance!!!
Take care of these motors, and they won't let you down! |
im at 197,xxx with nothing replaced but im goin to knock on wood cus i always do this to my self lol still running stong better then half of them out there ..
Got mine last week with 258K miles on it for 300 bux. Engine and tranny are strong

hellz yea. the '95 is throwin down 192k and running strong here. I just got my a/c fixed and i had to replace both u-joints in the rear. there was nothing left seriously..
next, Ill be painting the rear plastics. |
I have a 93 WT with a 4.3 in it and it has 222K miles on the clock. I just had to replace the Intake Manifold Gasket about 5 k ago but other than that no engine work. This truck was a work truck for 45k miles of its life In PA and i have no idea how it was cared for. Then by dad bought it and ran it up to 96k miles. He takes pretty good care of his stuff. He changed the tranny fluid and diff fluid when he bought it. He always ran rotella 15w40 in it. I bought it and it now has 222k miles on it. I take very good care of my stuff. I change the oil every 4 to 5 k and it usually gets rotella or a name brand 5w30. When my dad had it he used it to pull cars around and bring coal to the house. So the first half of its life has been pretty rough. Since i have had it i mainly used it for driving to collage and stuff which was about 20 miles one way of straight interstate and some l ocasionally pull my atvs ect but not very often. Im starting to get a little lower engine knocking upon startup but goes away after warm. Im hoping to get at least 250k out of it. Really i dont know if the body will hold up that long. it is starting to get a lot of surface rust on the fenderwells and stuff. Anyway i love these engines.

i have a 96 and it has 256,000 on it and i am just now havin problems with it. i think it is just a jumped timing . we will see when i get everything offthe front of the motor. up until this i ran it thru mud and everything with no problems.
We have a 1995 Suburban K1500 with 208,000 miles. Looks like hell, but runs like a champ!

1997 4.3 202k miles, original motor, rebuilt trans 3 years ago.
My 96 Blazer has almost 200,000 miles on it. This one runs great but is developing an appetite for anti-freeze. Gonna be a summer project when it warms up.
My 89 Blazer I sold a few years ago had almost 280,000 miles on it. The trans was on its last legs when I got it but I babied it and had no problems with it. The folks I sold it to managed to run it out of fluid and toasted the trans. |
My '99 just rolled over to 218k a couple weeks ago lol. I drive 80+ miles a day back and forth to school. No problems and runs great!
my 99 blazer as 192000km but the dealer replace the engine at 56000km due to a defect on 2 conecting rods, got a new engine in the crate from gm,my brother add a 1982 blazer and he run it to 1256000km with only rear and front diff replace carburator 3 times, timming chaine ,and the guy that bought the truck from my brother instal a snowplow and i still see the truck every now and then,i dont know if he did some work on it
I have a 99 jimmy with 238,000 still runs good
my buddy's 96 just hit 240,000
97 with 252,000
my 94 i sold had 285K the teen girl down the road who's dad bought it for her..put an additional 8k+ on it in the last 6 months and he says not the slightest issue with it ever and they trust taking it to NYC every weekend and he often takes it to Charlotte NC every couple weeks for buisness...i was like WOW..i was nervous about taking it evey 300 miles in a week lol...but she's still reliable and EVERY thing is stock on her minus tranny...and a few other tidbits.

Since I started this thread 4 years ago I thought I would provide an update. Now my 1996 Blazer has 246,000 miles on it and the engine still has not been rebuilt. I do have leaking timing cover gasket that needs to be replaced soon. I am leaking about a quart of oil between oil changes. I am trying to decide whether to fix this or simply keep it going a little longer and then rebuilding the engine. Anyone have an opinion? Should I spend the time and effort to replace the timing chain cover, or just wait and rebuild the engine?
I dont think it would hurt to change it
my 93 has got 203k on it. but who knows if its been replaced or not. best running truck i got.
this is a 95ish pick up truck that visits my work. runs day and night delivering parts from a warehouse to supplier http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y14...4/IMG00319.jpg |
my old one had over 368k miles on it. mine i have now,i know the body has 632k on it,i THINK the engine etc has been replaced sometime or another. Or either i just tagged a good one
i had 210,000 miles on mine and had to change it out do to a really bad timing skip distributor gear went to crap and engine followed with that 2000 chevy blazer
LOL
Getting a kick out of this thread. I'm a Ford guy and I did my homework before I bought my Bravadiva. Aint a damned thing wrong with 4.3 Longblocks. Guarantee if they run good and quiet at 100K, then with good maintenance and paying attention, no reason they cant go 500K. That is if you use a Good Synthetic. Talk about timing chains.. that's where really GOOD lube makes a big difference. Second point.. cam lobes. |
We picked up a 1998 S10 a few weeks ago with 524K actual miles. The seller put the last 300K on it as the wide load flagging truck for moving mobile homes long distances at 70 MPH on interstates.
A valve started sticking on the way home in it and finally stuck open. I found another engine with 119K miles and will replace the old one. With care I could have make it longer. 700-800K miles are the records that hear about. Most just are not going to be driving 10 hours a day 6 days a week to put 1/2 million miles on a 4.3 GM engine. I know with 3k oil changes and regular service the long block can be good for 500,000+ miles. |
