Default 86 700r/4L60

I got this 86 Blazer, 2.8 with 700R (I guess) 4WD with 86K actual miles. Was sitting for 16 yrs. I went through everything (fuel system, brakes, etc.) and got it back on the road. PO said only 500 miles on new transmission. I was driving short distances the become comfortable with the truck.
Trans started "slipping" one afternoon. Pulled over and checked to fluid. To my surprise, it had coolant in it. First time I've experienced that. Towed it home and at the advise of a good mechanic, I changed the fluid (and radiator), left the filter in (because it would be changed soon), and flushed the torq converter. Plan was to drive it with new fluid for a 100 miles or so, then change again with new filter.
Took it out yesterday and it wouldn't shift out of first--manually or otherwise. So, my plan now is to change the filter and see if that solves the problem.
Am I wasting my time? Is this toast? What have I done?
Thanks for you help.
Victor

I would say that your radiator needs replacement since that is the only possible source for coolant to enter the Transmission fluid circuit. Drain the trans immediately ! Good luck.

Unfortunately once the coolant contamination is present the paper linings on the frictions will start flaking off and start to plug things up. Ive seen fluid changed and will work for a while but it could leave you sitting at any point. The sure repair is a transmission overhaul with new frictions and band, gasket and seal kit at minimum. Good luck.

Thanks for your advise.
I still need to change the filter (a bit cold outside now). Since it's not shifting out of first, do you think it could be the transmission speed sensor?
It shifts into first and reverse without hesitation and didn't slip at all when I took it for a couple of test drives. Just wouldn't shift out of first.
I generally work on 40-60's cars and trucks, so not much experience in the electronically controlled department.
I realize an overhaul would be the sure repair, but I'm not in a financial position to do that and it would cost me more than I paid for the truck.
Thanks again.

Not going to be a speed sensor. Nothing but a lockup solenoid as far as electronics. 1986 700R4 is a hydraulic operated unit. You have a stuck governor. More than likely from clutch material floating around in fluid. Maybe find a used transmission. Good luck.

Thanks again Transman304 (AMC?). Sounds like you know what you are talking about.
So, I don't even need to waste my time changing out the filter, right? Because it won't do any good, right?
The only reason I mentioned a speed sensor is because I saw one listed for it on NAPA website and thought...maybe that's the cause.
I'll start looking for another transmission, but you know how that goes. A low mileage transmission for a 31 yr. old truck...right!!
Thanks again for your time and advise.

You are very welcome Victor. The 304 is the area code for WV. I feel you would be a waste of time and money as it would fail anyways. What part of the country are you from? I may have some contacts in your area that might be able to help you find a transmission.
