Default 86 k-5, 305ci Issues

Hello everybody! I'm pretty new to the whole gasoline world, I'm pretty knowledgeable about diesel engines but I haven't messed with these evil carbureted things very much... I just picked up a 86 k-5 that the body is in awesome condition the issue i'm having with it is that it starts and idles fine, and if you ease into it, it runs fine. However if you go to full throttle it starts cutting out real bad and clatters something horrible. I think it may have something to do with the carburetor but i've been away at work for a couple weeks and i'm trying to get a good idea of whats up with it.

Rebuild kits are pretty cheap if you feel like doing the work yourself but it could be other issues like out of time. Bad distributor. Could even be bad gas

I wish I had time to build it myself! i'm in directional drilling so I don't get much time off. I've been going over my options to either rebuild the 305, or I have a friend of my dads that has a 327 he said he would make a deal with me on, or i've found some 350's and 454's for decent prices... I'm leaning towards the 350 or rebuilding the 305 since all I plan on doing is regular driving on my days off and some light four wheeling.

I think it may be a bad carb, It only had a 1/8th of a tank when I bought it and I filled it up and drove it for about 50 miles when I got it. It fires right up when you start it and as long as you don't mash the pedal to the floor it runs pretty good. I'm thinking of building the 305 with hooker headers, a comp cams 4x4 xtream cam, holly carb, a aftermarket intake manifold and exhaust, another thing I noticed is that it still has the factory exhaust and cat and that when i felt the exhaust it didnt seem to have much flow coming out the tail pipe. I have also looked into a 12v cummins swap lol but I don't have enough time to get into that, maybe some day lol that's mostly the diesel tech coming out of me

i had a s10 where the cat was pretty much completely clogged and it didnt really run bad or cut out it was just insanely slow. once you got up around 40-50 it was like 1mph per second with the foot on the floor, when i cut it out it was like i put a turbo on the truck. there are places that rebuild carbs but they get up around $200

I ended up getting a couple days off of work so I got to mess with it finally, turned out to just be a dirty carburetor I ran some sea foam through it and it runs like a top now.

Glad it was something simple but if you ever do build an engine go with 350.Theres several more advantages over a 305
