87 COMANCHE 2.8 V6 timing issues

Howdy guys. I have a bud with a Comanche with a 2.8. It's a California Jeep. The problem we have is the timing is all voer the place up to 8-12* of difference as it idles. What all should i have him check?

Offhand, I would consider checking the distributor, timing chain, and timing chain gears.
