Default 87 k5 new transmission but wont go into gear

Was driving down the road and it shifted into neutral. Got a new transmission. Took it for a test drive and it did the same thing. Anybody have this problem or ever heard of it?

Make sure the transfer case is not disengaging or damaged. I have seen vehicles with broken or worn engine and transmission mounts let the power train move enough that the transfer case shifter will move enough in the boot to pop itself in neutral. Was the replacement transmission rebuilt or used? Fluid level correct? Good luck.

Ok I'll check that. And the transmission was new. Fluid level was correct

This is a 2nd Gen Forum, so most people might not be able too help you out with your truck. 95-05... I personally could not help out at all, sorry.

An '87 should be the 700R4. As others have said, I would look at bad mounts causing the shift linkage on either the transmission or transfer case to move to move. I'm really thinking this is an issue with the transfer case as I would have to assume that the transmission shift linkage was adjusted and checked for proper engagement into all of the gears. If you put it into reverse or drive with the engine running, then attempt to put it into park, are there any noises? A grinding noise when shifting from either reverse or drive into park would indicate that the output shaft was moving when park was engaged. If this is the case, then the transfer case is most definitely at fault.

Engine & Transmission is a general section so this is the appropriate place for this thread.
