96 Blazer Transmission problems
Ok, i have a 1996 Blazer that has a bad transmission. I have another transmission to put in it but i'm not sure if it will work. It is from a 1984 S10 i think it's a 4L60E but i'm not sure.... will a transmission from that vehicle work in mine?

The 4L60E was released in 1993. It was the 4L60 before that which was just a renamed 700R4. You need a 1995 or newer 4L60E from any other GM vehicle so equiped. The donor vehicle must have the same drivetrain configuration (2wd or 4wd) as your vehicle.

Ok so that transmission will not work? So only a 4L60E from 95 or newer will work? I heard you could switch the tail housings and it will work, is that not true? My blazer is a 4wd btw.
I guess it's off to the junkyard i suppose.....
Thanks for the help.

Yes, 95 or newer from a 4wd GM vehicle. The 4L60E was changed sometime in '96 to have a removable bellhousing and also change from a 4 bolt pattern at the rear of the housing to a 6 bolt pattern where it connects to the transfer case. You will need to check to see what you have in your truck. If you do not have the proper pattern, you may need the transfer case and/or adapter flange to make it all work.
While you can swap tail housings and tail shafts to make a 2wd transmission work in a 4wd application, the complexity in doing so is cost prohibitive. You have to gut the transmission to swap tail shafts.

Is the bolt pattern viewable from the bottom of the vehicle?
Thanks again for the help.

You can count the number of bolts that hold the transfer case to the back of the transmission. Snap some pictures from a few angles and we should be able to tell you what you have. Take them of the front of the transmission as well as the back where the transfer case bolts on.
