Default '96 Jimmy Trans Problems, PLEASE HELP!!

OK, I do live with a BMW master tech who said he could fix this for next to nothing...but i dont want to put him thru any un-nessesary labor, so help me if you can.

My Jimmy Just got a new factory gas tank and water pump, dont think thats related, but i thought you should know.

The D/OD only works up to 20mph.. then it starts reving,

I have been driving it in 2nd or low gears fine, (It gets up to 60-70 at 4000 rpms...i watch the revs tho, im not retarded) my gas milage sucks but i only work a few mile from home, like 3 miles there and back, so it shouldnt tear it up too bad...and the speed limit is 40..Also no other problems with any other gear, reverse works fine, park/1st dont show any signs of trouble, I can get a new tranny from $200-$500 from a credible junkyard, but i dont want to spend un-nessesary funds, or put my roommate thru any un-nessesary stress.

I would like to know if a new trans is the best idea or if any1 knows a good idea, im open to suggestions.

This was a parts car b4 i got it, and if it cost more to repair it then its worth, ill sell it.

I do love it tho, its my 1st Suv, and i like having a big car.

Thanx for all your help

NEW:so, you said it sounds like a hung up solenoid?

what does that mean, what causes it, and how much (est) do you think it will cost for parts?

and is it worth it just to try to fix the solenoid, or just get another trans for $350?

Sure sounds like you have a shift solenoid hanging up. It should be a relatively easy fix provided it is not a clutch problem inside the trans.

If it is just a solenoid, then it won't be much in terms of parts. Dirt in the fluid can cause a solenoid, or rather the valve the solenoid controls to hang up. The valve body would need to be removed. You really need to take it to a competent transmission shop for diagnosis. You could throw another transmission at it, but it could be something simple.

If you need to know more about what a solenoid is, a great place to start is google.
