Default 97 Blazer Tranny sluggish after fluid and filter replacement

Ok, so I just bought this 97 Blazer. After I drove it for a bit I noticed that the transmission was a little sluggish. So I checked the transmission fluid and it was so low it didn't even register on the stick. Today, I drained what little there was and replaced the filter. Then added all new fluid per the owners manual. Now, it is REALLY sluggish. On take off, it feels like it's starting in 2nd or 3rd gear. It does shift gears fine when accelerating while already in motion. It is just at take off it is much worse now.

Is this a sign that bad things are to come? Do i just need to give it a little time to work itself out? Any suggestions?

just as a sanity check, ensure the valvebody bolts are good'n'tight, not too tight otherwise you risk breaking it.
