Default 98 Blazer, A/T, 4WD, stuck in highest gear in range.

I think that's what it's doing. Here are the symptoms:

1. Park works.
2. Reverse works.
3. Drive range 1 can move the vehicle from a stop.
4. Drive range 2 can move the vehicle from a stop at a higher gear ratio than 1.
5. Drive range 3 won't move the vehicle from a stop.
6. Drive range D won't move the vehicle from a stop.
7. No upshifting from drive range 1 or 2.
8. After the vehicle is moving, drive range 3 and D begin to work above a minimum speed. The transmission downshifts on a hill. Below a minimum speed, drive 3 and D will cease to move the vehicle, and a manual shift into 2 or 1 is required.

What do you think?

Sounds like this could be your problem:

  • Car goes into gear but feels very sluggish like the brakes are dragging, but it will roll easily (starts out in 4th gear), you manually shift to 2 to get it moving, once it's moving you put it back in OD and the car shifts 3rd to 4th on its own and locks the converter at the appropriate time: ShiftB solenoid failed: Easy fix in the pan. Or a wiring problem from PCM to trans.. or PCM.

-OR-
  • No forward movement in OD or D, but L2, L1 and R work: Forward sprag is broken. R&R. Try not to run or drive the car or further damage could result.
I would bet money on the Shift Solenoid B problem though. Typically this is also accompanied by a code for that solenoid:
P0756 - Shift Solenoid B Performance or Stuck Off
P0758 - Shift Solenoid B Electrical
