Default 98 jimmy needs a new tranny

i have a 98 jimmy and somehow i have no idea how but i got a huge gash in the main housing of my transmission im going to put a junkyard tranny in it but they are saying at the scrapyard that i can only use a tranny out of a 98 or 99 which really makes no sense to me unless it is an electrical issue can anyone give me some info on the interchange between model years or direct me to an informative link thank you

You should be able to use any 98+ 4L60E transmission.

Hi a 4L60E from 1997 to 2002 will work.
Gm changed to the full bell housing in late 1996.
To get the top bolts out you'll have to remove the y pipe and drop
the cross member, lower back of trans to gain access to top bolts.
wobble extensions and breaker bar.

I said 98+ because there were other refinements that occurred in 98 that make it a more reliable transmission. One rule I always abide by is to never go older in terms of transmissions.
