Sounds like something electrical due to the aspect that if you restart, it will go another mile. Not much else to go on though... I will look and see if anything pops up in my references based on your description of the problem, but I doubt it.

If this truly is something electrical, it looks like the only thing that could impact everything would be the Pressure Control Solenoid, but that is as much as I can find. There is nothing that is exactly like your problem...

I'm not expert on these trans by any means, but after two days of making calls to local trans shops around my area about issues with my trans, one possibility could be this. Something came loose in the trans (Whether it's just gunk build up, or worst case, metal/parts) and found it's way into the filter. With your filter clogged, you will encounter issues, However when you shut the vehicle off, there could be just enough backflow pressure to "unclog" whatever's blocking fluid flow to your filter. When you restart, and try to engage the trans again, whatever had blocked the filter once again found its way back into the filter, thus creating problems for you a little ways down the road... Just a thought as to one possibility...

Since this thread is almost 1 year old and the OP has not posted since then, I doubt if he is still around.
