Default Broke Piston and Rod

I was working on my 84 blazer today getting ready to remove the motor and I ran into a problem. i have a a broken rod and piston and the crank is ceased up. i cant get to 2 of the 3 bolts that connect the fly wheel to the torque converter.
Anybody have an idea how i could free the crank?
Also does anyone know what would cause a piston to break apart?

if its a 2wd you cant drop the pan cause of that stupid crossmember there maybe if theres enough room, cut the pan off . one way i can think of is pulling the tranmission and engine as a unit then just pull the trans off when its outside the truck leaving the torque converter attached then you can get at all the bolts.
