Exclamation Bumping into neutral with cruise control set to 75mph, big problem!

So over the weekend my husband and I were coming back from a trip in my 1998 Chevy s10 Blazer. Cruise contrl was set to 75-80mph. My husband was driving, I was asleep. Apparently he accidently hit the shift into neutral when messing with the radio/hitting a bump at the same time. He looked down, realized it was tacking out and was obviously decreasing in acceleration, he turned cruise control off with the button. Oil pressure suddenly dropped, (Which is when I woke up) and car wouldnt go at all...we pulled over, shut the car off. Started it back up, it hesitated but started, and was making a awful squealing noise. There was no smoke, no knocking, no metal on metal sound, but a loud squeal, and very rough idle, still with barely any oil pressure. I had oil in the car, and just had oil changed the day before I left for the trip. We tried cranking it again, same thing. Shut it off, called a tow truck.

I had no idea my husband had accidently hit it into neutral, I thought this just...happened, later to my surprise He told me what really happened, and I am not eactly happy with him about this...He thinks it could be an oil pump, I think he blew my engine. Any advice on where to start, what to look for or anything? Could this be an oil pump? Please ANY advice would be helpful! This is my daily driver! Thanks!

Adrienne

I agree with your assessment. You likely wiped a bearing or two out on the crank which is why you have low oil pressure now.

yea, really thinking its a bearing now, cranked up up last night, cranked up right away, still a horrible squeal, but oil pressure was at 40! drove around my yard, oil pressure never dropped, but that squeal is terrible...gotta be a bearing...thanks for all your help guys!

Just for informational purposes, was there a lower intake manifold coolant leak in this truck's past? Healthy engines dont spin bearings.

Sounds to me like this is a rare combination of faults. I dont know the specific logic but CC should disengage in neutral so the P/N safety switch wasnt working.. and seems to me the PCM should have been programmed to disengage/limit CC at over 4000 rpm

do not think the car has had any coolant leak problems, not at least since I have had it, but I have only had it about 8 months. Going to get a used engine today, finally convinced my husband he had blew it. It started knocking/ taping slightly and he couldnt deny anymore what he had done...
