Default Can a/c compressor lock up engine?

attery and starter seemed OK and everything ran fine when I had got home an hour earlier.
I've recently had issues with my a/c and this last week it would make a loud grinding noise when I'd first start the engine. The noise would go away once I got the rpms up, but would come back again every time I'd start up again.
It seems logical to me that the compressor couldn't take any more friction so it seized, and therefore the engine can't move the belt.
Does that make sense? If it does, can I just get a belt for a set-up with no a/c and bypass it?
Nevermind that it's the middle of summer in Georgia... I can live without a/c if I can just make it back & forth to work.
I can't afford much else, I'm the sole provider for my family & have an autistic 7yo. I'm not afraid to get dirty though, so if there's something that can be done, I'm sure I can do it!

Any and all suggestions are GREATLY appreciated.

Debbie

You should be able to get the A/C delete bracket from Autozone. This is just a bracket with a pulley on it. No need for a different belt. Though in this situation, I would recommend replacing it.

Thumbs up Sounds reasonable!

Thanks for your great suggestions & answering so quickly!
I'll try taking the belt off... if that works, I'm off to Autozone for the a/c delete bracket (I'll have to study up on that a bit.)
Thankfully there's an Autozone within walking distance and I have tomorrow off!

I'll let you know how it turns out.

Thank you!!

Thumbs up Eninge DOES crank

YAY! I got the belt off and the engine cranked just fine. Now it's off to Autozone for either an AC delete or a shorter belt.

The diagram on my firewall shows the threading for a no AC system, but there is no wheel where it says it should be. Does this AC delete thing have to do with putting that pully in its place and a shorter belt?

Well, I guess I'm about to find out...
...I'm just VERY happy that my engine isn't dead!

Well... the a/c bypass pulley isn't kept in stock and will cost $39.99. That seems like an awful lot for just a grooved wheel, doesn't it?

What's the luck with just robbing another pulley from one of my dead vehicles and kinda Jimmy-fitting it on?

I'll probably need the shorter belt any which way I go, right?

if you get an AC bypass pully you will use your stock belt. my AC compressor locked up on mine burning the belt into two pieces, and 39.99 is a small price to pay compaired to 300$ for the new compressor.
