Default Cannot talk to computer!

I have a 97 blazer with some issues, but the odd one is I cannot connect to my computer. Every now and then I get a random engine light but when I hook up a scan tool it says it cannot cummunicate with the computer. Any had this problem before? The truck runs and drives, just cant see what is going on. Help!

gotta make sure of the obvious...you do have the ignition in the ON position when you try to read it correct?
