is there any way that you can explain this part to me this is what has me stuck the engine is on top dead and the marks on the distributor is lined up but do not no how to turn the oil pump to line up with it
If the driven gear is installed incorrectly, the dimple will be approximately 180 degrees opposite of the rotor segment when it is installed in the distributor.
4. Using a long screw driver, align the oil pump drive shaft to the drive tab of the distributor.
5. Guide the distributor into the engine. Ensure that the spark plug towers are perpendicular to the centerline of the engine.

If you look at the bottom of the distributor, you should notice that its notched to line up with the oil pump drive shaft. just climb over the truck and use a flashlight and you'll see how it works. Using a long screwdriver, turn it until it lines up with the distributor. Once it falls in,the rotor should be pointing to number one cylinder. Just try it a few times, not really that hard. good luck.

Since your not sure what position the cam is in you may be 180 deg out. In that case pick the dist back up and turn it 180 deg. If its out 180 out you will know. As it wont start and may pop back thru the intake. Also make sure you follow the diagram and use the proper timing marks.. I just went thru this and once its in its in place its pretty much fool proof.
