Default Chip behind the tranny front seal

I finally got the front tranny oil seal out, and I noticed a chip in the aluminum behind the seal. Almost perfectly in line with it is a hole that appears to lead back into the tranny (possibly a pressure bleed or something). The "chip" looks like it could have been on purpose, but I'm not too sure. I can't get a picture that will show it.
Man this is hard to explain.
Does anybody know what I'm talking about, or is it definitely a broken part?
I'm going to get a better camera tomorrow to try to get a good pic.
