Default Clogged Cat? P0420 & P0422

Engine codes P0420 and P0422 are why my check engine is on. I believe I read 420 was possible clogged cat? It takes me 6.2 seconds to get from 40-60 pedal to floor (timed it). I had to put it to the floor to merge on highway aswell? Anyone else ever had these symptoms?

Those codes tell you that the PCM does not like the readings from the O2 sensors, suggesting a cat(s) that are not catalyzing (removing emissions). That alone will not cause performance problems. The things that kill cats can cause performance problems such as coolant and oil from a blown head gasket or a fuel/air mixture way out of bounds. Also, it may not even be the cat. The O2 sensors, their wiring or the PCM can be faulty. The entire O2 closed loop suggests a problem, you dont know where the problem is yet.

A cat can eventually become plugged but it can stop working without that issue. The definitive test is exhaust back pressure but there is also VE, vacuum, IR gun temps.

Let me know if you want help starting a proper diagnosis of your problem

Thanks George,

I will be borrowing a friends temp gun to see if it is way hotter before the cat. I suppose I should check my o2 sensors and replace them.

The car did get a “new” cat welded on in 2015 I believe however I am pretty sure that cat was pulled off of a junker.

I will remove the sensors and check the pressure if I can get ahold of a tester.

I’ll let you know how it goes.

If you have the ability to graph your O2 sensor operation in live day to do that First because you’re O2 sensors may be fine

My 0-60 was 12.48 on a flat surface, is this overly slow or is it just me. I’m pretty sure last time I tested it was 10.2
