Clutch slave throw... how far?

Clutch slave throw... how far?
Actually trying to solve a problem for my father on his 95 S10.
Searching the web I see lots of posts about the same symptoms, but no answers.
Anyway... I was wondering if anyone knows how much throw/extension the clutch slave should have? I assumed it was bad, so I pulled it off the tranny to test it to see if it was working (I didn't think it was). Well it pushed the rod out maybe 2 inches? But I don't know how much it should be coming out and I'm not have any luck finding an answer.
Anyone have any ideas?

Without a description of the symptoms, all I can say is 2 inches of travel in the rod should be enough to disengage the clutch. It's always nice when a clutch problem can be solved without dropping the transmission but it sounds like you need to investigate the clutch assembly.

He was sitting at a light, when it turned green he pushed in the clutch and it wouldn't go into gear.
If you shut it off, press the clutch, put it in gear, start it and let out the clutch, it will move.

Time for a new clutch.

It was. I figured I should change the slave anyway, so I tried that first... as sort of wishful thinking. No joy.
Pulled the tranny and found the clutch plate had thrown some springs. Oh well. Still a work in progress, the weather keeps conspiring against me.
I'd like to say thanks to you and everyone on here. I miss my Blazer (though in some ways I don't) , but I miss this forum. A few years ago I bought another small SUV and joined another forum. I don't think I've ever had a question answered when it comes to repairs. What little comes takes weeks. On here the help was always quick and usually pretty helpful. So I just wanted to say thanks again.
