Lightbulb

I have a built AMC 401 pushing around 400 HP.

I want OD and came across a running 85 in immaculate condition for $2,000 without the motor.

I also found an 86 carbureted 454 turn key for $500 including a set of oval ports to be built up. I will also get an Edelbrock performer dual plane with it.

I know NOTHING about these trucks.

Convince me to come back from the dark side.

My uncle that is helping me build it has been building Hot Rods for over 45 years so he can guide me through it.

But what do I need to achieve 400-450 street able HP?

The left over budget is $2,000 can shaved heads and a cam achieve this?

I also have a 670 CFM Holley Truck Avenger and 31" Mud Terrains I'm throwing on it.

You should do this and take a lot of pictures.

An 86 454 probably came out of a 1 ton dually and in stock form is maybe good for 240 hp but the potential is there.

A cam, intake, heads and headers will probably put you close to 400 hp but how tired is the engine and are you rebuilding it?

I am not sure you have enough carb for that engine. I used to run a 750 CFM on my mildly built 396 Nova. Is the Holley 670 the old school Holley or the new updated version. The old Holley's would leak fuel and dam near needed to be adjusted every time you stomped on the go fast peddle.

The engine was pulled from a low mile wreck. It will be a slow build. I can't find much info on running the 454 carbed with a 700R. No OD can be a deal breaker for me. I will run a stock 350 TBI in the mean time. Any interchangeable mods? Transmission mods to handle the big block? Would I be better off going with a 454 TBI with all the other mods and a custom flash?

FI for the win
There is a reason FI conversion kits are available to the hotrod guys
If the made the price reasonable more guys would likely do it

BTW they probably are not changing the speed limits any time soon LOL
You probably could get a lot of bang for the buck if you do a SBC instead

Default Well the plans have changed.

I am putting the 454 with a built Turbo400 and a tail shaft from a Jeep 400 in.

My Wagoneer will be a mutt. But I'm not the first to do this.

I know a SBC build is cheaper.

I know gas is high.

But 454 torque is what I want. My wife and I own a 30' travel trailer we will be pulling once in a while and the BBC will allow me to have a fun toy in the mud and local 4X4 park.

I want 9.5:1 compression with a healthy low to mid cam and at least 500 FT.LBS

IT WILL RUN A TRUCK AVENGER.

I don't want any computers on it. Even MSD.

Need cam, intake, and piston/head combos. I have open chamber, closed chamber, peanut, and oval ports at my disposal. As well as flat tops and dished plugs.

There are tons of stock BBC parts that I can use.
Chime in boys.

What do you guys think about
RPM Air Gap
Holley Truck Avenger 670cfm might go to 770cfm but don't see the need if its not run over 5,200 RPM
Lunati 262/268 Voodoo Hyd Cam Kit - Chevrolet Big Block 262/268 - Lunati Power
Upgrade the coil
Domed pistons with oval port
Would that net me the low down torque and offroad attitude I am looking for?
