Default crankshaft sensor

greetings all so riddle me this i have replaced the crankshaft sensor 3 times the 1st time it worked for a cpl weeks then it died i bought 2 more and niether worked and all it does is turn over its getting gas. now someone mentioned a shim is needed because as the parts wear out the sensor gets too close to the crank? but when i call all the parts store to inquire about a shim they think im crazy, any ideas cuz im all out. its a 2000 jimmy slt 4x4.
