My 96 S-10 Blazer, 4 dr 4wd 4.3V needs a new motor. I'd rather do a crate motor vs a junkyard motor. Rebuilt would be fine too.
So... Where do I find one? I'd like a long block and just be done with it. How do I decode the VIN to make sure I get the correct motor for plug and play?
I know 96 was a weird year with some 95 parts on it, I don't have OBDII I have the old version.

1995 was the hodge podge year using OBDI and OBD1.5 with 2 different ignition systems and 2 different computer controls. 1996 & 1997 were nearly identical to each other. Both of them were VIN "W" and both had OBDII engine controls.

My VIN says 96 but I have the OBD 1.5. Also the radiator for a 96 didn't fit but a 95 radiator matched the factory one I pulled out.
Mine is a W code.

1996 was required to have OBDII. 1995 was not, and could have OBD1.5
What is the 10th character of the VIN?
Is your alternator mounted on the driver side,
or the passenger side, of the engine?

Do more searching around the Internet. I was able to locate a Marshall reman engine for my '01 Jimmy for a little over $1400 on sale at one particular vendor.
I'm not going to guarantee that you can find one as cheap but cheaper than the Jasper price should be doable. For what it's worth that is the same price they gave me when I was searching for an engine.
