Default Crossbar over the transmission pan?

I own a 1998 GMC Jimmy SLE 4 wheel drive. I was trying to do a transmission fluid change today, but hit a snag. Across the back of the fluid pan, there is a large black bar . I believ it is the transmission crossmember but not sure. I cant fit a socket or wrench between this bar (crossmember?) And the fluid pan itself. Is it possible to get the fluid pan out without removing the crossmember, and if not will i need a jack to support the transmission? I have yet to see this bar or jacking the transmission up mentioned in any other tutorial/forum/manual I have read upon trying to service my transmission.

Welcome to the forum. The easiest way is to unbolt the rear transmission mount and put a jack under the transfer case to raise the transmission away from the crossmember and give you some room. Be very careful when removing the pan as any forcing or prying to get the pan to clear will result in the shift solenoids to get broken. Good luck.

I have a 2000 4WD and had to unbolt the crossbar to get it out of the way to get to the pan bolts. Didn't have to remove it just maneuver it out of the way. Used a swivel to get to some of the tight spots but not too bad.
