diagnosing 4 wheel drive??

diagnosing 4 wheel drive??
I had the tranny replaced a few years ago and someone had mentioned that I should replace the encoder motor...but how do I know it's that?
I really need advice we have no good mechanics around here!
Also the TCCM does NOT light up and the 4x4 hasnt worked in over 5 years...but now all of a sudden it is trying to kick on by itself
