Downshifting into 3 going up hills

Hey everyone. In the college town I am in for most of the year, I have to do alot of driving on hills. When I have to drive up a hill, I normally move the shifter into 3rd to get it/keep it out of overdrive and to get more power to get up the hill. Am I doing something good for the transmission staying out of overdrive on hills? I normally DO NOT downshift going down hills unless my brakes are not as effective as I hope. Then I have a set of speed limits for downhill downshifts: 40mph in 3, 25mph in 2, 5mph in 1. Otherwise I drive in D. Normally if I need to go slow, use 4LO, pull something or crawl through snow, I move the lever all the way to 1st and use minimal throttle. Am I doing something good for the transmission? I also have a trans cooler installed and Lucas in the fluid. The fluid has 12k on it (will be changed soon before I go back to class in under 3 weeks) and doesn't smell funny or anything. Still nice and light pink. However, sometimes I get some black residue on the dipstick (it isn't in the fluid) when I check the fluid. Thanks.
