Default EDI distributor marking

I've been fighting the P1345 code for a while.
This is on a 98 Blazer 4.3 vortec, bone stock base model.
It has had an intermittent miss from idle to hwy speed.
But it gets 16-18 mpg and it doesn't have any hard start problems.
We bought it used, and don't know the whole history.

Here's what I've done so far, and a question about EDI marking.
I verified the distributor indexing at #1 TDC, dead on the 6 mark on the housing. Almost no backlash in the distributor drive when the crankshaft was turned backwards. Rotor and cap were aged but not bad.
I rang out the wiring and all voltages and continuity were good.
I found the crank position sensor unshimmed, with a bit of a nick, so I changed it.
I cleared the code and ran the case relearn, but the test wouldn't complete due to the code reset mid-test. So I replaced the cam position sensor, cap and rotor, spark plugs and plug wires (just to freshen it up). Ran the relearn and had the same result.
Now for the marking and part identification part of this.
The distributor housing is marked for indexing a 6 cyl and an 8 cyl.
I noticed that the baseplate that the rotor attaches to was stamped with an 8 near the slot used for removal and installation of the cam sensor.
Does this mean anything?
Is it for an 8cyl, so the PCM can't compensate for the rotor position?
I saw a pic of a baseplate on another post and it appeared to be stamped 6.
Which is what got me thinking it might be the problem.

Any thoughts?
