egr check procedure

egr check procedure
i would think this is in the forum already but i cant seem to find it
i am looking for the service manual directions on how to check the egr system. i have read some of the threads on cleaning the egr and have tried that. i am still down about 5mpg off of the 22mpg that i have gotten in the past. i just have a cheap actron code reader and it says the egr system is incomplete.
also if some one knows of a reasonably priced code reader/scanner/analyzer that commands the circuits on and off i need to know where to get one
any help is appreciated

Here's a link I found. It may be helpful to you. It's not from the GM service manual for your truck, but a quick peruse looked like it might work for you. Note there is 6 pages. Part 1 -How to Test the GM EGR Valve (P0401, P0403, P0404, P0405, P1404, P1406).

hey thanks thats exactly what i was looking for, i will try and look at it saturday, my code was 1406, he says the pintle is stuck, when i had it off it looked good and seem to go all the way closed. i blew out the vacuum line from the engine to the evap canister to get rid of that code and the next time i check i had the 1406 and no evap code. so i took the erg valve off and cleaned it, so now the actual 1406 code is gone but the reader tells me that the erg system is incomplete/inconclusive. i only have a cheap aktron code reader, i have cleared it about 30 times now, and it always comes back as soon as i put it in gear and take off, i cant even make it to the end of the drive.
thanks again
jim
