Default Engine lurch and cuts off - '89 Jimmy

Recently acquired the 1989 Jimmy. A few times (twice today) when I was coming to a stop the engine died. It did restart but not as quickly as a normal start. It will also "lurch" on occasion when stopped and a few times the Check Engine Light has come on right after a lurch. Because of it being an 89, box stores can't connect and check for a code so I know I need to go to a mechanic for the engine light issue to see what it means, but any suggestions on what could cause it to just start cutting off?

Thanks,

I don't think GM has a part# for this tool just yet , but it is generally referred to as a Paperclip....Next time your CEL\SES light is lit, follow these instructions:

In terms of the symptoms, it could be a wide range of things as we all know. But 2 things come to mind and are relatively easy. Clogged EGR and\or a stuck IAC. There's an EGR cleaning process around here somewhere...

Thought for sure you were pulling my “newby” leg, but based on the link you shared it looks like a Paperclip is the way to go. Thanks for the tip.

lol , used to use that trick on my 89 IROC , which in itself was a never ending project..It would act like your Jimmy whenever the EGR got crudded up..
