Engine rattling on my 2004 zr2
Can’t seem to find the problem . The rattle is coming from somewhere near the distributor. Seems to have happened about 30-40 miles ago after driving on about 25 miles of gravel road through state forest. Not really that bumpy. I noticed it was making a sort of rattle/grinding sound . Can anyone help. Please it’s my only vehicle and I must get it fixed.
How loud is it? How is the engine running otherwise? What'st the oil pressure look like? Does it change pitch or frequency at different RPM's?
My 04 has a noisy rattling PCV valve, drove me nuts for months before I traced down the source of the sound... Could hear it from in the cab... Doesn't effect the way the truck runs at all though, just annoying...
If it's running rough, two things come to mind:
1) a worn out distributor gear; not uncommon on these engines. The fix would be to remove, disassemble, and replace the gear on the distributor, or replace the distributor completely
2) a collapsed lifter; not super common, but not unheard of. The fix involves pulling the intake and valve covers off, removing the rocker arms and push rods, lifting out and replacing the lifters, then reassembly.
