Default engine won't start on it's own

i have a 1992 Blazer with a 4.3 it won't star on it's own. it turnsover but won't start. but hears the thing if i spraysome sortof starting fluid in the throttle body intake it starts right up and runs fine and untill you turn it off with no problems. also the check engine light is on but i have no available fund to purchase an OBD1 or to have it looked at other than myself. also the 4 wheel drive button won't engage the front wheels unless you stop the vehicle turnoff the enginepress the button and then cranck it which then would include spraying the starting fluid into a fuel injected vehicle. if anybody can help i would appreciate it. thank you

Autozone or Advance Auto Parts both do free check engine light help. They'll scan the codes, tell you what the are, and then you can come back to us and get some much more effective help!

Starting issue-
Sounds like your fuel filter is partially plugged and/or your fuel pump is about dead. Tehse trucks need more fuel pressure to start then they do to run, so once you get it running , it will stay running, for now. Eventually it wont do that either. If you can test the fuel pressure that would be great. If not, replace the fuel filter first and see if that takes care of the problem.

Check your vacuum lines, then control front axle engagement. Search teh Self Help section for a thread called 4x4 no wokry, maybe this will help, or something along those lines.

Get AZ to read the code. Post up and we can go from there.

i changed the fuel pressure regulator and the fuel filter. i still have to spray starting fluid in the TBI to get it to start only when it's cold. it won't cold start on it's own but once it's started you can turn it on and on and it's fine. im thinking it may be a sensor because when you do get it started it runs real rich and lean as if something is ****ing up???

I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong, but the starting fluid may be the reason it runs rich and lean after you get it running. I don't believe starting fluid is sensor safe and you may have messed up your O2 sensor(s).

You should still get a fuel pressure reading if you want any more specific help diagnosing the problem.

One thing at a time.
Slight miss int eh rain- cap and rotor
stupid switch under the dash- brake switch? Should be able to push it so it makes ocntact witht eh brake peddle, it will click, then the brake light will go out until you tap the brakes. At least that is how its supposed to work.

As for your initial propblem, check your IAC (idle air control). It control the idle when cold, similar to a chock on the old carb'd engines. Once the engein is up to operating temp, it dont need to adjust it and your problem goes away.

Don't take this the wrong way, but it has been covered in quite a few threads... Might be a better topic for a different thread though, that is unless you'd like to hijack your own thread. Its up to you.

I would start by lubricating the seal with some silicon spray. Then lubricate the hinges with some lithium grease. Follow that up with a tightening of the latch in the tail gate (search).
