Default Floor shift lever noisy

Hi everyone. Lately my floor shift lever in my 98 Jimmy has been making some noise as if it needs oil. It isn't smooth or quiet as it used to be and sometimes it seems out of sync between the trans and the lever when it comes to between D 3. Sometimes it is difficult to shift into 3rd and back to D when I need to downshift. Otherwise, it works fine between P and D and 3/2/1. It is 3 that is the hard spot. Should I be putting some lithium grease on the moving parts like where the lever is attached to the floor and the detent notches and the cable? Thanks

Wouldn't hurt anything to put grease to it.

Any parts I should be avoiding other than the wiring? Thanks

I put some white lithium grease on the detent notch wheel (same stuff I use on the door hinges) and it not only quieted it down, but now it is so smooth, I sometimes overshoot D and it goes into 3. But I assume that is a good thing because the only way that happens is when I am not paying attention. LOL. But thanks for the tip and sorry for the dumb question. I wanted to verify that I wasn't going to do any damage before I did it because I don't need another unnecessary repair bill, especially for something expensive to replace.
