Default Froze engine

Has anyone removed a siezed engine. How can you get the converter out? 1997 4wd. can you remove the trans leaving it bolted to the motor?

thats pretty much how you do it unless you wanted to drop the pan and unbolting all the pistons which i dont think would be much easier. just drop the transfercase and slide the trans back off the engine and leave the torque converter in place

1. are you sure the engine is locked up? I've seen a starter stay engaged/go bad and it will keep an engine from turning over

since its an automatic you can't remove the spark plugs, squirt some oil in on top of the pistons, let it sit overnight and then tow it down the road and pop the clutch to break the engine loose (done that before, too).

I've pulled V8's out of cars before without touching the transmission (may not work on that engine compartment packed/stacked S10.) I just unbolted everythng and started to lift and pull/push the engine forward and the torque converter comes forward with the engine and spills ATF/Dexron all over the ground/frame.

Good luck with your job.

If you do try to remove the engine with the torque converter still attached to the flex plate, do so by first removing the transmission from underneath. You must get the engine/trans tipped and then pull the transmission straight back. You can damage the pump if it doesn't come straight back keeping everything aligned.
