Default gas gauge tricks???

hey i just bought a 86 chevy c10 and the gas gauge doesnt work...any ideas? could i mount sum kinda external gas gauge or sumthing like a boat has? or how do i fix that problem cuz i just ran out of gas today and was stranded for a while, that aint happeneing any more. i tried the counting ur miles or w/e but i cant seem to get a full tank of gas b/c when i go to fill up the pump shuts off right away even if its empty so i have to pull the nozzle out of the hole till its almost all the way out and fill it till i think its full because i dont want it overflowing all over the gas station....any ideas

thx, jake

Jake on that model of truck it is almost always a bad ground wire on the fuel sender (on top of the tank),could also bethe sensor wire itself, which is also on the tank, but in my experience it's a broken or rusted off ground wire. Just run a new wire to your frame and you should be good to go, but you'll have to access it first, I can't remember if you have to drop the tank or not. If so it may be easier to unbolt the bed and move it back to access the fuel sender, but will be your preference.

any ideas about that pumping gas problem...the gas pumps make it seem like its full no matter wut they automaticly shut off like if it was full so i have to pull the end of the nozzle till its almost outand then fill it either until it overflows or till i think its full

That can only be caused by a few things that I can think of,
1. the wrong size of filler tube/hose.
2. A kink in the filler hose/tube.
3. A build up of pressure in the tank, usually caused by a plugged vent hose.

I'd bet with both of these problems that someone (who is unskilled to put it nicely) has been messing with the tank, and you need to either drop the tank or remove the bed and check everything out.

On a similar topic, my 98' blazer has had that same problem for years, and i can usually go off of the tripmeter and my average mileage so i don't have a problem. I noticed it got better a little after i replaced the fuel pump. before, the needle would just bounce, now, it gives close readings. it'll say empty when i have 1/3 tank, 1/4 when i have 1/2, and so on, but any idea how to get it to work like it should?
