If your distributor has the horizontal towers, then follow the EDI engine timing thread found in the Tech Article (DIY) Index link in my signature. The newer EDI system does not place the #1 cylinder at TDC-compression exactly. There are two marks you need to line up.

Define exactly. I got piston to TDC then moved crank approxe 60 degrees to align both marks on crank pulley. Using A plastic tube the piston appears to half way down the cylinder. Am I crazy....well about this?

That does sound excessive. From what I remember, it should be 10-15 degrees of rotation. It has been awhile though. 60 degrees sounds like way too much.

The harmonic did slip. The new one lined up perfect with the notches on the timing cover. I'll try and start it tonight. I left the light on under the hood and the battery is stone dead. This has to be OBDII, its has a crank sensor and did disply PXXXX codes. The vin suggest its a CPI system. Can I upgrade this to MFI?????? The timing cover is plastic but the upper intake is large and metal.

You have the older CPI engine which means there are no upgrades.

Glad you got it figured out. Hopefully it starts without an issue for you.
