Will I need to stop the engine from rotating when installing a new balancer? This will be my first time doing one of these. So far the instructions I have found just say to install the new balancer using the installer tool, no mention of motor rotation before balancer completely seats?

I'm pretty sure the balancer is keyed. I've never had one off, but all the ones on other vehicles I've worked on have been.

yes, you are right about it being keyed. Does this eliminate the need to hold the fywheel from turning while tightening the balncer to the crankshaft snout? Sorry if this a dumb question.

If you cannot achieve the required torque without the engine rotating......then yes you will have to use something to keep the engine from rotating.
I have always used a flywheel turning tool to hold it and then torque the bolt. Some use a prybar or something but, I would not.

I thought you were just worried about the timing mark being off if the crank rotated in relationship to harmonic balancer. Sorry if I got confused by your question.

No problem, I should have been more clear in my post. Thanks for input.
