did som e more today finally. but i slept in so not much

got the flywheel bolts out, there's just 3 right?
dropped the crossmember

now i has question about a suggestion above. cutting the exhaust? just the piece that crosses under the trans? will i still be able to get to all the bolts around the trans? is that the common backyard mech procedure?
i'm, thinking about taking the transfer case off before just o i have more room. anything i should know?
do i leave the dipstick tube where it is?

Transfer case has to come off to get the transmission out. I don't think it's possible to drop both at the same time. You'll tip the tail end of the transmission down and be able to get to all the bellhousing bolts. The dipstick tube will drop with the transmission to a point but then you'll realize it's stuck and that is when you pull it out of the transmission. It is quite possibly the most stressfull part of doing a transmission IMO especially installation because it has to be lined up correctly to be installed right.

i think i took the transfer case off wrong. i took off the "adapter" with the case. but it won't clear the inner shaft. so i think i was suppose to take it off on the case side not the tranny side?

sorry bout all the Qs, this is my first trans.

You need to go get a Haynes manual, like yesterday.

I realize its a little late to ask this question.....How do you know the trans needs to be rebuilt? I would hate to think a shift solenoid or something simple that could be replaced with the trans in the truck is actually whats wrong.

Found a link that might help http://www.gmtruckhq.com/?q=node/93

#6. No 3rd or 4th gear: “3-4” clutches are worn out. R&R. The car is safe to drive (in 2) until you can get it fixed.

i should have just drove it around town till i had money to get it done.... well whatever.

You don't need to cut the exhaust... Unbolting it from the exhaust manifolds may be required, but not cutting it...
