Please help I'm desperate... I'm putting a timing cover in a blazer. I have had it all put back together but realized the oil pan didn't seal on the timing cover when lining it up the first time I started all the bolts then tiggtened the bolts on the bellhousing then proceeded to torque the bolts on the pan. It apeared to be sealed but after running 20 minutes I was wrong I pulled the pan back off and have tried to line it up but it does not seemm right I'm dry fitting it now so I don't ruin the pan gasket. can someone please explain clearly the bolt tightening sequance, the clearance measurement points and wheather or not I have to unbolt the transmission if I can't get within those specs then bolt the pan to the block then bellhousing? I have searched a lot but i am still a little confused please reply

Not sure if this helps or not but here's the torque sequence/spec info.

I've never tried to assemble the pan with the engine in the truck, but it was pretty straight forward on the engine stand. Tighten the bellhousing bolts after completing the above sequence.
I would assume the 14 thousands of an inch "engine block clearance" spec is measured as difference between the engine block trans mounting surface and oil pan trans mounting surface. With the trans still bolted in the truck you could probably just measure the gap between the pan and trans bell housing

Adam, You will most likely not stop this leak with just the gasket. You will. Most likely need to apply some RTV to the front of the block where the timing cover mates. I recently did this with my 4x4 timing cover. I had to remove the motor mount bolts to get the engine up enough to lower the oil pan down enough to apply the RTV to the front of the block & the channel in the timing cover where the gasket lies. Cure time is critical.
Just to be clear, I remove the distributor before lifting the engine up. I also remove the top portion of the fan shroud.

Ya I pulled the diff and pan. Bouggt another new pan gasket and re did it. that's a bit of a pain but its lined up I think. I let the rtv cure overnight and in a few hours I'm gonna go put the rest back together enough to start it. But that front diff is the bigges pain in the *** ever. I spent another 2 hours tryin to get that **** in there with no luck. If I lift the motor up will that gain enough clearance for that?

I found that the easiest way to install the diff is to remove the passanger side tube and intermediate shaft. The diff will come out with them together but is a pain to put back in in one piece... Also it helps to have a jack under the driverside lower control arm to adjust as necessary. Its a tight fit between the brackets oil pan and lower control arm, but you'll get it.

Thanks I'm gonna pull the tube off. I had the jack under the control arm but its just stock right there between the control arm and the frame. I didn't get a chance to work on it yesterday tinight hopefully that will go in

So guys I'm havin no luck. I just get back to workin on the pos and I got a leak again same spot between the pan and timing cover I used plenty of rtv. To give a bit of back story someone put this motor in out of a astro and left it leaking oil. They tried to rtv the **** out of it but it when that didn't fix it they left it for the owner to deal with. From what I'm told they dropped the motor and broke the original pan and replaced it with this one. This pan seemed lined up and it has a new timing cover I don't wanna just buy a new cover and gasket again the pan seems straight has anyone experienced a leak like this? I'm about to just buy the stuff and use more rtv everywhere! I need this thing out of my garage but I'm not givin it back leaking oil. I'm just at a loss what should I look for?
