Default high rpm shifting

Hi, i recenly bought a 96 blazer 4x4, i bought it nonrunning, and just replaced the fuel pump and got it running, the previous owner told me it shifted fine and i had to take his word for it but that is not case. When driving it on takeoff it does not shift out 1st until about 40 mph,all other gears seem to shift normally. I was just wondering if anyone knew of a few simple things i can check or try?I have checked the fluid and it looks/smells ok and the level is fine.

I have a longer than normal shift from 1st to 2nd and at times would jerk/hard shift when it finally upshifted and was just told on Sunday that my torque converter needs replaced. It also does it regardless if warm or cold. Not sure how to check it but maybe it gives u a starting point.

50lb..I totally appreciate the link but I am just being honest when I say that there are many terms in that link that either I have never seen period or have seen just dont know WTH is lil lone where it is or what its function/symptoms are. So Im gonna start researching inner workings/parts in transmissions LOL and my learning continues......
