Default Ignition Timing

Ok, I know there are like a billion threads about this, and even a DIY, but I still have some questions. Hopefully that isn't a problem. 4.3L Vortec.. When setting TDC will it be there if I line up the grooves and notches from turning the crank? I have read posts where people say line them up, and others where they say to put something in #1 and when it pushes out it's there. From what I've read the marks aren't exactly at TDC? Sorry for ANOTHER timing thread, but I need some help here. Thanks for all replies!

I got it!!! I didn't use the timing marks and just put a screwdriver in the #1 hole. Thank you to everyone on here and the DIIY on timing! I'm really starting to love this forun and the people on it! Very helpful people!
