I was driving my 98 on the highway and it basically went into limp mode. It wouldn't go above 3500 RPM's and was consistently dropping in MPH the farther we got and then the battery light came on. I pulled off after about 1/4 mile of this and parked and turned the truck off. All of the gauges were normal before I pulled off but when I went to start the truck again after a few minutes, it struggled to start up and when it did, it basically sounded like all hell broke loose inside the motor and the temperature gauge was at red line even though it was perfectly fine 2 minutes ago. Confused and quite frankly pissed off. I popped the hood and looked. Nothing was smoking, nothing was leaking, and nothing looked loose. I've had 5 other coolant problems with the thing prior to this incident so it would have been pretty evident to me if there was some sort of cooling problem. I checked under the truck for any puddles or damage and there wasn't anything. I called roadside assistance and then my friend to pick me up and it currently stranded on the side of the major highway waiting for a tow truck. Anyone have any ideas on what this could be?
Gut level response: Bad fuel pump? Catastrophic leak from lower intake manifold gasket into lifter valley and oil system?
No. I ended up grabbing my spare key yesterday and went to the shop to check it out since they’re closed on the weekends. Got a pretty nasty rod knock coming from the top end so that sucks. Engine only had 141xxx and it been serviced pretty frequently for it to die like this

Nope. Got an oil change 2 days before this. Checked the oil anyways to make sure everything was fastened down properly and i still had oil and if anything, i had to much oil. shop did it so it got dropped off at the same shop that changed it
Alrighty guys. Quick update. So shop called, it was rod knock like I figured it was, Shop also said that it just seemed to be early engine failure. None of the fluids were low, all of them were topped off and normal levels. They're gonna replace the engine for a cool $7,500 but the engine is brand new and comes with a 4 year unlimited miles warranty on it so we'll see how that goes
