Default Metallic/ping noise when shifting from P to R or D

As the title says,

I'm getting this weird metal ping noise that is rather loud when taking the car out of park and putting it in reverse or drive.

Doesn't do it every time but can easily be replicated. It does it when you take off from a dig as well. This is all while in 2wd. Generally makes weird metal "rattle" noises while driving.

Other than this noise all is well. Truck shifts fine and has no issue entering any gear.

I've inspected it thoroughly and it's not just a metal shield or something stupid. U joints seem fine. The noise seems to be coming from the transfer case. It's hard to tell though.

Anyone experience something similar?

check the catalytic converters. could have a heat shield coming off of one of those. had a similar deal in my old pick up. took the heat shield off and the noise when with it.

EDIT: i would also double check the tightness of the skid plate bolts. could be just enough that when you are shifting and everything does its pre-load it makes them rattle. just a thought.

I initially thought skid plate at first too. Checked the bolts and snugged em up real good.

Noise is still there.

I honestly believe its something in the driveline. I'm leaning towards something internally wrong in the t-case. But everything works just fine, which is what is throwing me off.

Did you ever get to the bottom of this? Mine does the same thing. U joints are new. Definetly driveline related. Mine will do it if I brake hard and go back to throttle too

It ended up being the rear u joint. Replaced that and the problem went away entirely.
