Hey everyone, i recently purchased a 1996 S-10 Blazer 4WD. It's got a couple problems. First off Trannys bad, it's a 4L60E, I know how to take care of that but i was just wondering if anyone here has done it, how long did removal, rebulding, and reinstalling it take you? Also the motor has a noise, It makes a clicking sound, When its cold it doesn't make it but once the engine warms up it starts going pretty good. Any Ideas? Any help is greatly appreciated, Thanks!

I take trannys to the shop. They Suck in my opion.
As far as the clicking goes can i get a lil more info. is it more of a ticking like a lifter? knocking like a rod or main bearing? are you losing oil pressure at idle when warm? Could also be trans related

Thats exactly how I'd describe it, It's more of a ticking noise. Noe, no loss in oil pressureThe ticking gets pretty dang loud too. My dad and I are kind of thinking it's a lifter, put we're just not sure.

Could be a collapsed lifter, bent pushrod, or a rocker arm. Could also be half-a-dozen other things, like a loose timing chain.
Take a big screwdriver (big = at least 12 inches long) and touch the tip to various spots on the valve covers while you press your ear to the handle... listen like using a stethoscope. It works. You should be able to pin-point the sound enough to know which side valve cover to pull off.
I don't know if I'd put a high-dollar rebuilt trans (or rebuild it myself) in a '96... depends on the miles and overall condition. I'd lean more toward finding a good used trans from a wrecked Blazer. It's a bit of a gamble, but much cheaper and less hassle for a vehicle that's high mileage.

It has 127 K on it. I'm still definately looking for a used low mileage tranny, haven't found a whole lot. Once we get the tranny out we are also gonna pull the motor. Thanks for the advice B5Bee. I've realized one thing about this Blazer, they are not handy to work on, there just isn't a whole lot of room to get to stuff under there. Of course i'm used to my current vehicle, a 1994 Chevy Cheyenne has all sorts of room to get to stuff under there and it's 2WD so it doesn't have as much stuff underneath it as well.
Also wanted to add, about the noise in the motor. The guy could of been lying but he said its made it ever since he got it which was in 2007. He said he'd had it into several shops and they hadn't figured it out. I really don't know if he was being truthful about it or not.

One of the best things about S10 sized Blazers is that they're (relatively) easy to work on and used parts are cheap and plentiful. Yes, they are a bit tight inside, but not all that difficult.
Try this website for used stuff... I've had great luck with it. It's a network of junkyards that posts their inventories online. Plug in your year, make/model, part you need, state, and zipcode and it'll give you a list of whats available, starting with what's closest to you at the top.

Some places might update their stuff more often, so call first.
