The fuel pump is powered by the fuel pump relay and the oil pressure switch. When you first key on, the fuel pump relay closes for approx 3 seconds. this pressurizes the fuel rail. Once the engine starts, (Or creates oil pressure, The oil sending unit closes a switch and it now powers the fuel pump. If you dont have oil pressure, you certianly dont want your pump to run. If your oil pressure sender is unplugged, or has failed, you will only have power to the fuel pump for 3 seconds or so.

What you describe is the way it should be.

Why spend the money to replace the relay? There are several under the cover that are identical. Swap the horn relay for the fuel pump relay if you want. It wont make any difference though.

The fuel pump relay does not power the fuel pump when the engine is running. So if the truck starts then stalls due to lack of fuel pressure, it may be a bad sending unit.

Blazerboy states he has power to pump when he keys on. That shows the relay is good.
