Default Original Transfer case?

Hiall! New here, please feel free to give me the business - I can take it. Ok, I recently bought a 2000 Blazer with a 236 transfer case on it. When I drive it, and put it in 4hi, it makes a noise...nothing I can put my finger on, and to an untrained ear, nothing would be noticed. but it makes me turn it right back off again as it does come with a certain pucker factor. I'm all about tearing everything apart, rebuilding, etc. Then it dawned on me that it might not be the original parts on there (yes, as long as I've had this vehicle, it has had this issue). My question is how can I tell if the 236 is the original model that is supposed to be on this vehicle in the first place? Is it transmission matched, or anything? I do see NP8 in the glove box. Just trying to see if someone didn't stuff something that went down the road in it in order to sell it to me. Thanks in advance for your help!
