Should tranny fluid be changed after 200k miles?
I have about 200k miles on my 98 truck and I have never done a transmission oil change. Someone said that it may hurt it worse if you change it after that many miles. It stills works ok, but I'm thinking preventive maintenance. I know my dipstick is rusty looking.

That transmission fluid change will cost around $2000+ by the time all is said and done. Most shops wouldn't touch it because they know that you will probably not be able to drive the vehicle away afterwards.

Don't do a flush. Most of the time it will end up needing a rebuild afterwords(as has already been stated).
Dropping the tranny oil pan, draining what's in there, changing the filter and gasket , and replacing the atf that was drained would be good a good service to do though...and that'll probly cost less than 20 dollars and an hour of your time.
Be aware that there are 2 different depths of tranny oil pan, and you need the correct filter for your depth pan.

If the ATF gets flushed out , all the grit and debris also gets flushed out.. After so many miles with the original ATF , this grit and debris is now what provides friction to the clutch packs.
Most of the time, after a tranny flush , it starts slipping and then just goes downhill from there real quick.

Same happened on my '89 IROC with 700R4... And to my bud's Honda..In fact He had the ATF changed in his 2nd Honda and the same thing happened...Took him two times to learn.. Expensive lesson to learn..

Just draining the pan? Or having the old fluid pushed out and new put in with the machine?
I've never had an issue with just dropping my pan before, done it a ton of times, and all my buddys do regularly on their chevy trucks too. Never seen it cause an issue.
The machine will cause an issue almost every time on gm products in my experience though
