Default timing problem

i got a 98 chevrolet blazer with a 5.3 i got headers and a k&n on it and i cant get the timing right on. i took the heads off to replace the head gasket cuz it had heated up on me and it had got water in the oil so rite now i have it on -20 degrees so it can run and if i turn it 1 tooth it end up on +35 and runs like ****. my friend said it could be my timing chain dats a lil loose.
