Default timing problem

hey guys, just bought a 96 s10 blazer, hasnt ran in over 2 years, guy said 3 shops looked at it, did all kindsa stuff, couldnt get the plugs to fire. everything tested good i pulled the dist cap off, looked like it wasnt installed right, reinstalled and plugs fire, but no start. ok so after trying to crank up, i put it back @ TDC on #1 on the compression stroke, as i did the first time, and the rotor was no longer pointing at the 6, was about 30-40 degrees past the 6 stamped into the dist housing. plugs still firing, plenty of gas getting up there, but it cranks like the timings horribly off. everything seems to be working, and looks like the only thing they didnt mess with was the timing chain. any ideas??

How did the gear look on the distributor? maybe it is worn enough to jump a tooth while cranking?

it looked really good very little wear. i went ahead and put #1 at TDC on compression again, tore the timing cover off, and the timing marks seemed off to me. it was in fact a new chain and gears, didnt even have oil on it yet. wish i had history on what all was done to this thing. im more familiar with small blocks where the timing marks line up with the dot on the crank just below the dot on the cam gear, but the dot on the cam gear was all the way at the top of the gear. maybe it was just installed wrong??

si i got around to messing with this thing again, turns out i didnt have it on the compression stroke after all, and the cam gear was on wrong. took the chain off, turned it 180 degrees, put back together, fired up on first turn, idled perfectly for about 30 seconds, tapped the gas just a hair, started sputtering, feathered the gas to keep it running, finally it dies, and now wont start again. all plugs are firing, even gas straight in the TB doesnt start it. checked fuel pressure, key on 62 pounds until pump goes off, then a steady 54, even for 10 minutes after the key is turned off. and 62 pounds steady while cranking. everytime i try to start it, right when i turn the key back to stop cranking, it sputters just a tiny bit, making me think timing, but ive been over it a million times and seems perfect. ive only talked to 1 person about it, they havent looked at it in person, but seem to think the pcm? havent had codes read yet but guess towing it 6 miles to get it done is next on my list
